Need to blow some money and beef up your biceps? Look no further than Nikons new professional level lens. Weighing in at over 6 pounds, this 300mm beast of a lens packs in all of Nikons tech, and sports a fast 2.8 aperture. Silent Wave motors make it a polite lens while the VRII anti-shake keeps the pictures sharp which is important for that 300mm focal length. Additionally, there is a tripod detection mode which optimizes the vibration reduction for tripod use…. whatever that means.
For weighing so much, it actually is not THAT big and sports a 52mm filter thread, which is nice. All that weight translates into a sturdy feel and I would imagine a very durable lens.
This lens is aimed at the pro market and as such, is priced accordingly. Just shy of 6,000.00, this lens will be financially out of reach for most shooters, but its still pretty to look at……
At this price though, I have to wonder why someone would not just use the already awesome and industry standard 70-200mm f2.8 and just get closer…. physically. I suppose that this lens would have very specific applications, and is probably why the Nikon marketing team thinks they can demand such a high price.
What do you think?

As you’ve said, it will remain financially (and physically) out of reach of most shooters and I can only wait for the high and mighty to post the outcome of its comparison with the well acclaimed 70-200 f/2.8. That said, I wonder if the simultaneous launch of the TC-20E III 2x teleconverter has a significance, probably for the bird / wild-life photographers?
